A hair DNA test uses hair - with visible roots - rather than the usual cheek swab, as the DNA sample for paternity or relationship testing. This method is ideal when a traditional buccal swab isn’t practical, preferred, or possible. With our hair DNA test kit, you can carry out a simple collection at home and send your sample securely for analysis.
It is important to note that cut hair will not work as the DNA is concentrated in the root or follicle.

A hair paternity test using mouth swabs for the alleged father and hair for the child will cost £154 (£99 for the paternity test plus the £55 forensic extraction fee for the hair sample) and results are available within 7-8 working days of receipt at our forensics laboratory.

 

Legal, Ethical & Emotional Considerations

• Consent is essential

Consent must be given by a legal guardian for children under 16, or next of kin if the individual is deceased. We require appropriate consent before performing any DNA test. For discreet DNA testing we also require copies of photographic ID from the participants and the person requesting the test.

• For legal or court use

While an At Home Paternity Test with Hair is great for personal insight, legal purposes require strict chain-of-custody and supervised sample collection.

• Emotional preparedness

It is important to note that the hair samples will be destroyed during the process of extracting DNA. It will not be possible to have them returned to you after testing.
